BOOM! Another Freaking Lesson!

When you start your own business, if you’re anything like Stacy and I, you soon get tired of the many “lessons” (otherwise known as hardships) that seem to come in rapid fire succession hounding you down as you’re trying to fly. You wake up each morning, ready to take on the world and suddenly…BOOM…lesson number 772 hits! Trying to kick your badass self to the curb.

But you’re resilient. In fact, you’re like the guy from Groundhog Day (the movie). You keep waking up…either out of sheer determination, optimism, or let’s face it (resignation some days). Never knowing how the day will end, but certain of how it will start.

Until it finally dawns on you…you idiot, the lesson is your friend. The hardship is either strengthening you or redirecting you or both. So roll with it. And dare I say…embrace it. Like a trusted friend. Because the lesson has your back. It’s rapid-firing on you now to save you from the small business firing squad that has come for so many (from which there is no return). So, next Groundhog Day remember these important lessons:

  1. Value Kindness. Don’t become so jaded running your own business that you mistake being a badass for being a b*tch. You started your business with pure intentions. Something moved you to do this. Either faith, or financial security, or fulfillment - or all of it. The right people will see this in you if you continue to see it in yourself. Kindness will take you farther than meanness. But…

  2. Don’t mistake kindness for weakness. Sometimes it’s HARDER to be kind. To truly listen and have empathy for your clients, your partners, your prospects when they’re amped up on stress and the demands of their jobs and life in general. But your badass self can reach beyond that with KINDNESS to find creative solutions that work for everyone (including you). This drives your business, and theirs, forward. Yet, there’s always a Groundhog Day curveball…

3. Sometimes moving forward means letting go. We’re not telling you to be Ghandi here. If all that listening and kindness doesn’t seem to be working, know when it’s time to kick off the wall and swim. This is not about quitting. This is about letting go of securities that can be holding you back. Letting go of comfort (like that client you know so well but eats up all your time?) brings you greater peace of mind AND profits. Moving forward means exactly that. Keep it moving. Momentum is your friend. But don’t forget…

4. Swim strong. Once you let go of that wall you need to swim like a badass. This is not the moment to doggy paddle. Spot a new island and swim toward it…confidently. When you become clear of what you’re letting go of, what you’re swimming toward should be even clearer. In our case it was re-engaging with our authentic target audience. The ones we set out to serve in the first place - Entrepreneurs with Hustle and Heart. Re-charting our intention and swimming toward our target confidently brought us more clients, more projects and more fulfillment. We just had to have the courage to kick off the wall and go. And remember…

5. Sometimes you need a life raft. All that swimming can be exhausting. You may feel like you’re drowning. You’re not. You’re just swimming so strong you need a moment to collect yourself. Hop on. Take a breather. Get some rest. And then… jump back in! A new day is waiting.
